Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has questioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his campaign promise on electricity supply following another collapse of the national power grid.

Obi raised the concern after the national grid experienced its second collapse in January, plunging several parts of the country into darkness and disrupting economic and social activities.

In a statement shared via his official communication channels, Obi recalled that President Tinubu had, during the 2023 election campaign, promised Nigerians a stable and reliable electricity supply, stressing that power sector reform would be a top priority of his administration.

According to Obi, the repeated collapse of the grid highlights persistent structural problems in Nigeria’s power sector and raises questions about the pace and effectiveness of reforms under the current administration.

“Nigerians were promised improved electricity supply. Yet, the national grid continues to fail repeatedly, with devastating consequences for businesses, households and the overall economy,” Obi said.

He noted that unreliable electricity has continued to stifle productivity, increase the cost of doing business and worsen the hardship faced by ordinary citizens who rely heavily on alternative power sources.

The former Anambra State governor called on the Federal Government to urgently address the root causes of the grid failures, including weak transmission infrastructure, poor maintenance and inadequate investment in the sector.

Obi stressed that fixing the power sector remains critical to Nigeria’s economic growth, industrialisation and job creation, urging the government to move beyond promises and deliver tangible results.

The national grid has suffered several collapses in recent months, prompting widespread criticism from stakeholders and renewed calls for comprehensive reforms in electricity generation, transmission and distribution.
