Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has said that activist and politician Omoyele Sowore cannot rely on statements he previously made and later withdrew as evidence in the ongoing legal proceedings involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Omokri made the clarification while reacting to Sowore’s trial, stressing that comments he had publicly retracted should not be admitted or relied upon in court.

According to him, once a statement has been formally withdrawn, it loses its probative value and cannot be used as credible evidence against any individual.

“I have withdrawn those statements. You cannot rely on statements that I have retracted,” Omokri said, insisting that Sowore’s attempt to reference them was legally flawed and misleading.

He explained that the statements in question were made in the past but were later corrected after further clarification, adding that continuing to circulate or rely on them amounted to misrepresentation.

Omokri accused Sowore of selectively quoting past remarks to advance a political narrative rather than addressing the legal standards required in court proceedings.

He also cautioned against politicising judicial processes, noting that courts rely on verifiable facts, sworn testimony and admissible evidence, not opinions that have been publicly disowned.

The former presidential aide reaffirmed his support for President Tinubu, stating that allegations against the president must be proven with credible evidence rather than recycled claims and social media commentary.

The exchange comes amid heightened public interest in the trial involving Sowore, which has sparked renewed debate on political accountability, free speech and the use of public statements in legal disputes.
