Counter-terrorism campaign: FG moves to fast-track trial of 5,000 insurgents
The Federal Government has begun moves to fast-track the trial of about 5,000 individuals suspected to be involved in terrorism-related activities across the country.
This was disclosed in the 2025–2030 Strategic Plan of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC), a copy of which was obtained on Wednesday.
According to the document, the suspects are currently being held in pre-trial detention facilities, a situation that has created a major backlog of terrorism-related cases within the justice system.
The NCTC explained that its legal team, in collaboration with the Defence Headquarters and the Federal Ministry of Justice, is reviewing thousands of case files to ensure quicker resolution.
“At present, there are approximately 5,000 individuals suspected of having been involved in terrorism-related offences who are being held in pre-trial detention,” the document stated.
It added that the ongoing review is aimed at expediting prosecutions where sufficient evidence exists, while dismissing charges in cases that lack adequate proof to proceed to trial.
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has been working with relevant security and legal institutions to decongest detention facilities and strengthen Nigeria’s counter-terrorism framework through lawful and transparent judicial processes.
The Federal Government said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to balance national security with respect for human rights, while ensuring that terrorism cases are handled efficiently and fairly.
The NCTC noted that clearing the backlog would improve the effectiveness of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism campaign and enhance public confidence in the justice system.
