The Federal Government of Nigeria has dismissed claims that a gold refinery was sited in Lagos in breach of the federal character principle.

In a statement on Monday, the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development described the allegation—credited to the Northern Elders Forum—as misleading and inaccurate. The ministry clarified that no decision has been taken to locate a gold refinery in Lagos, insisting that the Federal Government remains committed to fairness, equity, and national inclusion in the siting of strategic projects.

According to the ministry, discussions around refining infrastructure in the solid minerals sector are still at the conceptual and consultative stages. It added that any eventual decision would follow due process, stakeholder engagement, and strict adherence to established national principles, including federal character.

The ministry urged the public to disregard unfounded claims capable of stoking regional tension, noting that accurate information would be communicated through official channels when concrete plans are finalized.
