PDP Will Collapse If I Defect to APC — Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would collapse if he were to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Wike made the assertion while responding to speculations over his political future and growing claims that he may eventually join the APC following his continued association with the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
According to the former Rivers State governor, his political influence and grassroots support remain a major stabilising force within the PDP, despite the party’s internal divisions and leadership crisis since the 2023 general elections.
“If I leave the PDP today and move to the APC, the PDP will collapse. People know the truth,” Wike said, insisting that many of the party’s structures and electoral strength are tied to his political network.
Wike accused some PDP leaders of hypocrisy, noting that while they publicly criticise him, they privately acknowledge his importance to the party’s survival. He argued that the current problems facing the PDP stem from internal indiscipline, lack of respect for agreements, and failure to manage internal conflicts effectively.
The FCT minister also reiterated that he has not defected to the APC, stressing that his decision to work with the Tinubu administration was based on national interest rather than party politics.
Wike’s comments come amid ongoing debates within the PDP over loyalty, reconciliation, and the party’s direction ahead of future elections, with several stakeholders warning that unresolved divisions could weaken the opposition party further.
As of the time of filing this report, the PDP leadership has not officially reacted to Wike’s latest remarks.
