JUST IN: Power Supply Disrupted as National Grid Collapses
Power supply across Nigeria was severely disrupted on Monday following the collapse of the national electricity grid.
Data obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that electricity generation plunged sharply from 2,052.37 megawatts (MW) to just 139.92MW within one hour, between 2:00pm and 3:00pm.
The sudden drop triggered widespread outages across the country, leaving millions of electricity consumers without power.
According to NISO, only three out of the country’s 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) were able to receive power during the period. The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) accounted for the largest allocation, taking 80MW, while the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) received 20MW. Benin Electricity Distribution Company also took 20MW.
All other DisCos — including Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt and Yola — recorded zero power allocation, according to the system operator’s data.
Nigeria has experienced multiple national grid collapses in recent years, often resulting in nationwide blackouts and prolonged power restoration efforts. While the exact cause of Monday’s collapse has not yet been officially disclosed, grid instability, ageing infrastructure and operational constraints remain persistent challenges in the country’s power sector.
As of the time of filing this report, power generation had not fully recovered, and electricity consumers across several states continued to experience outages.
Further updates are expected as authorities release more information.
