Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has stated that President Bola Tinubu does not have the constitutional authority to stop the implementation of tax laws that have already been passed by the National Assembly and formally gazetted.
Oyedele explained that once a bill completes the legislative process—receiving presidential assent and being gazetted—it becomes binding law. At that stage, its enforcement cannot be suspended or reversed by executive directive alone.
According to him, any attempt to halt such laws would require a fresh legislative process, including amendments or repeal by the National Assembly, rather than a presidential order.
He added that the clarification is important to manage public expectations amid ongoing debates around Nigeria’s tax reform agenda, stressing that governance must follow due process and the rule of law.
