Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday departed Abuja for Kebbi State on the directive of President Bola Tinubu to meet authorities and families of the schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga.

According to a statement by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima will hold discussions with Governor Nasiru Idris, traditional rulers, security chiefs and parents of the missing students.

Nkwocha said the President specifically instructed the Vice President to reassure the people of Kebbi that the Federal Government will ensure the swift and safe rescue of the abducted schoolgirls.

He added that Shettima will also deliver the Presidentโ€™s condolences over recent security incidents and restate the administrationโ€™s commitment to strengthening safety in schools nationwide.

Accompanying Shettima on the trip are the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda; Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro; Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; and NEMA Director-General, Zubaida Umar.

The visit follows a pre-dawn attack on Monday in which gunmen invaded the school, kidnapped at least 25 students and killed the vice principal. One of the girls reportedly escaped as hunters and security agencies intensify search efforts.

The incident has heightened concerns over worsening insecurity and banditry across the northwest.

Earlier, President Tinubu described himself as โ€œheartbrokenโ€ by the abduction and the concurrent killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba and several soldiers in another attack.
