A United States lawmaker, Riley Moore, has criticised China for cautioning Washington against the proposed military intervention in Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians. He maintained that Beijing had no authority to influence America’s foreign or security decisions.

Speaking on Tuesday, Moore said the U.S. would not “seek permission from authoritarian regimes” to act in defence of human rights and religious freedom anywhere in the world. He added that the U.S. Congress was reviewing measures to ensure accountability for “crimes against humanity” in Nigeria.

His remarks came after China’s foreign ministry warned against foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs, expressing firm support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Moore, however, dismissed Beijing’s stance as “hypocritical,” accusing the Chinese government of repressing religious minorities within its borders.

He said, “The United States will decide its course of action based on American values and interests, not on the dictates of the Chinese Communist Party.”

The debate follows recent tensions sparked by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of possible military intervention in Nigeria, a move that has drawn mixed reactions globally.
