Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has reacted to recent comments by former United States President, Donald Trump, who claimed that Christianity faces an โ€œexistential threatโ€ in Nigeria.

In a post shared on his social media pages, Sowore dismissed Trumpโ€™s assertion, describing it as misguided and politically charged. He argued that Nigeriaโ€™s problems are not rooted in religion but in the failure of leadership and the systemic corruption that has plagued the country for decades.

According to him, the focus should not be on seeking validation or sympathy from foreign leaders but on demanding accountability and competence from those in power.

> โ€œNigeria doesnโ€™t need foreign saviours; what we need are leaders who are honest, courageous, and committed to justice and equality,โ€ Sowore stated.

He further explained that both Christians and Muslims in Nigeria suffer from the same economic hardship, insecurity, and poor governance, stressing that religion is often used by politicians to divide the people while they continue to exploit the nationโ€™s resources.

> โ€œWhether youโ€™re a Christian or Muslim, the reality is that bad governance affects everyone equally. Itโ€™s not religion thatโ€™s under threat in Nigeria โ€” itโ€™s good governance,โ€ he added.

Sowore also urged Nigerians to focus on building strong institutions, promoting education, and ensuring transparent governance, noting that these remain the most reliable paths to national progress.

He concluded by calling on citizens to rise above religious manipulation and work collectively towards a just, free, and prosperous Nigeria.
