FG Urges Review of Civil Service Disciplinary System

The Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), Prof. Tunji Olaopa, has called for a comprehensive reform of the disciplinary control system in Nigeria’s civil service.
Olaopa said the current system needs overhaul to promote culture change, value reorientation, and faster handling of disciplinary cases. He made the call during a joint retreat between the FCSC and the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF).
He described the relationship between the two bodies as “Siamese twins,” stressing the need for collaboration to prevent role conflicts and ensure effective governance.
Olaopa also urged a rethink of how merit, competence, performance management, and wage structure are linked to restore the Federal Government’s image as an “employer of choice.”
The Head of Service, Esther Walson-Jack, praised Olaopa’s commitment and highlighted ongoing reforms such as Computer-Based Tests for promotions and merit-based recruitment, which aim to enhance transparency and efficiency.
The call comes amid concerns about bureaucratic delays and lack of accountability in Nigeria’s civil service.
