The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, a socio-political organisation in Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone, has declared its support for calls demanding the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The group also announced its readiness to embark on a peaceful demonstration in solidarity with the detained IPOB leader.

This came after activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, urged South-East governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to join the movement pressing for Kanu’s release. Sowore said he had contacted several prominent Igbo figures — including Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo; Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti; Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi — to participate in the planned protest.

He also disclosed that he had reached out to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar through his team, noting that Atiku’s involvement would give significant momentum to the campaign.
