N’Assembly Backs Tinubu on Borrowing – Speaker
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has stated that the National Assembly is not against President Bola Tinubu’s borrowing plans.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday at the 8th Annual African Network of Parliamentary Budget Offices Conference, Abbas clarified that borrowing remains a legitimate tool for financing infrastructure and promoting sustainable growth.
He dismissed recent reports suggesting lawmakers opposed the government’s debt strategy, noting that comments made at a regional conference were misrepresented.
According to him, the President has assured the legislature that all new loans will align with Nigeria’s medium-term debt framework and global best practices.
Abbas further explained that proceeds from borrowing are being directed into priority sectors such as power, transportation, and agriculture — areas expected to stimulate productivity, boost revenue, and reduce poverty.
