Kano Gov: We Inherited Empty Coffers, Now Rebuilding State Finances

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has said that his administration met an empty treasury when it assumed office but has since restored financial stability through prudent management.
Yusuf made the disclosure on Thursday during the formal distribution of permanent and pensionable appointment letters to 4,315 former BESDA teachers in the state.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Government House, Sanusi Tofa, the governor accused his predecessor of reckless financial practices. He specifically cited the engagement of over 128 tax consultants who, he claimed, failed to yield meaningful results for the state.
The governor explained that his government blocked financial leakages and introduced reforms to ensure public funds were directed toward citizens’ welfare. He pointed to Kano’s improved performance in the 2025 NECO and WASSCE examinations as proof of the positive impact of the state’s investments in education.
“If they believe in themselves, they should come forward and show us the tangible work they did in Kano. Instead, they exhausted the treasury and left the state indebted to banks,” Yusuf said.
He stressed that his administration had made personal sacrifices to ensure the state’s resources were spent on development projects rather than political leaders.
Yusuf further pledged to continue prioritising education, healthcare, and infrastructure, while upholding transparency and accountability despite criticisms from the opposition.
