Author Nancy Bankole has highlighted the power of daily hugs in improving both physical and mental health.

Speaking ahead of the launch of her new book on Saturday (via Zoom), Bankole explained that hugs go beyond simple affection. According to her, research shows that hugging regularly can reduce stress, strengthen the immune system, speed up recovery from sickness, and ease depression.

She noted that hugs trigger the release of “feel-good” hormones such as oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, which help relieve pain, calm anxiety, and boost mood.

Bankole lamented that in today’s technology-driven world, many people silently battle loneliness, grief, and depression, often underestimating the extraordinary emotional, spiritual, and physical strength a hug can provide.

“A hug can lift a heavy heart, calm anxious thoughts, and lighten the weight of sorrow. For those who feel abandoned or rejected, an embrace can speak louder than words: you are not alone, you are loved, you are understood,” she said.

The author stressed that while medicine and technology have their place, the simple act of a hug often delivers comfort and healing in ways nothing else can.
