Aregbesola: Any govt that neglects the people will die

The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has said that any government that fails to prioritise the welfare of its citizens will eventually lose relevance.
Speaking on Saturday in Lagos while receiving defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), and Labour Party (LP) into the ADC, Aregbesola stressed that people remain the centre of politics and governance.
The defectors included former Lagos PDP chairmen, Muritala Ashorobi and Tunji Shelley, ex-Lagos Central Vice Chairman, Tai Benedict, and the party’s former youth leader in the state, Chief Niyi Adams, among others.
According to him, Nigeria is currently experiencing hardship and uncertainty under the present leadership, hence the need to rise above partisanship and chart a new course.
“Any government, whether democratic, military, authoritarian, or monarchical, that does not make the welfare of the people its foundation will soon lose relevance and die,” he said. “There is a limit to which the people can be squeezed before something eventually gives.”
He emphasised that the ADC’s constitution guarantees at least 35 percent representation each for youth and women, giving them a combined representation of no less than 50 percent.
“This is not tokenism, but recognition that Nigeria’s future lies in giving voice and power to those long underrepresented,” he said, adding that the ADC is committed to internal democracy, unlike parties owned or financed by individuals.
