The Fusengbuwa ruling house, next in line to produce the Awujale of Ijebuland, has officially begun the selection process for a new monarch following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

Speaking during the traditional “Beating of the Gbedu Drum” in Ijebu Ode on Thursday, the head of the ruling house, Adedokun Ajidagba, emphasized that the next Awujale must strictly uphold Ijebu traditions.

Oba Adetona, who died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 after a 65-year reign, was buried according to Islamic rites on July 14. This sparked controversy, as traditionalists argued he should have been buried following Ijebu customs. However, Governor Dapo Abiodun stated that the Islamic burial was the monarch’s wish.

Ajidagba warned that no candidate should ignore the Isese (traditional) system, especially the use of the Ifa oracle for selection, which the late Awujale himself reportedly endorsed.

He further urged the Ogun State Government to avoid meddling in the process, stating:

> “We have written to the state government to steer clear and let the traditional process take its natural course.”
