The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has criticized the involvement of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) in the construction of a new headquarters for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), calling it a direct threat to the commission’s constitutional autonomy.

In a statement issued Tuesday, CUPP National Secretary, Peter Ameh, described the move as an “unacceptable return to old practices” that could compromise the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.

> “This is a direct assault on INEC’s independence,” said Ameh, a former presidential candidate and ex-President of the Inter-Party Advisory Council. “Section 158(1) of the Constitution clearly insulates INEC from external control. Section 81(3) ensures its financial autonomy through a direct charge from the Consolidated Revenue Fund.”

Ameh also criticized INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu for defending the FCDA’s involvement by citing historical precedent, saying such justification is “outdated and indefensible” in light of current electoral laws.
