An Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State has sentenced a 24-year-old Point of Sale (POS) attendant, Yusuf Olamilekan, to 18 months in prison for stealing N1 million from his employer and using it to gamble.

In her ruling on Monday, Magistrate O.O. Fadairo found Olamilekan guilty of the charge and sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment. However, the court offered him an option of a N60,000 fine in lieu of jail time. In addition, the convict was ordered to pay back the stolen N1 million to the complainant, Emeka and Jane Company.

The Magistrate stated that the prosecution had successfully proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.

According to the Prosecuting Officer, Inspector E.O. Adaraloye, the offence occurred on April 7 at around 6:00 p.m. in the Sango-Ota area. He told the court that the defendant unlawfully withdrew N1 million from his employer’s account without consent and used the funds to engage in a game of chance, ultimately losing the entire amount.

The offence, Adaraloye said, contravenes Section 383 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

Although Olamilekan initially pleaded not guilty to the charge, the court found him culpable based on the evidence presented.
