Ondo NNPP Guber Candidate Edema Resigns Over Alleged Betrayal

Olugbenga Edema, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) governorship candidate in the November 16, 2024, Ondo State election, has announced his resignation from the party, citing betrayal and internal crisis.
Edema’s decision comes shortly after the Court of Appeal in Akure dismissed his legal challenge against the victory of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. His suit, which was earlier struck out by the Federal High Court, sought an interpretation of Section 15 of the Third Schedule to the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and aimed to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to nullify Aiyedatiwa’s nomination.
However, both courts dismissed the case following the NNPP’s unexpected withdrawal of support during the proceedings.
In his resignation letter addressed to the chairman of Mahin Ward 11, Ilaje Local Government Area, Edema expressed disappointment in the party’s leadership, accusing it of abandoning him during a crucial legal battle.
“Since I joined the NNPP in June 2024, the party has been plagued by internal wranglings and disputes that have hindered its growth. This situation is not conducive for a party serious about winning elections,” Edema stated.
His resignation highlights growing tensions within the NNPP in Ondo State and raises concerns about the party’s preparedness for future elections.
