BAFARAWA LAMENTS DECLINE OF PATRIOTISM AMONG NIGERIAN LEADERS

Former Sokoto State Governor, Dalhatu Bafarawa, has voiced concern over the diminishing sense of patriotism among Nigerian political leaders, warning that this trend poses a serious threat to national unity and democratic progress.
In an interview with BBC Hausa, Bafarawa described the current political landscape as troubling, particularly the weakening of opposition parties. He noted that many politicians now switch allegiance to the ruling party not out of ideological conviction, but for personal and selfish gains.
“It is disturbing to witness opposition parties being systematically absorbed into the ruling party for reasons that do not serve the public interest,” he said.
Bafarawa, who recently announced his withdrawal from partisan politics, condemned what he called the erosion of democratic values and political accountability. He warned that if this decline continues, it could have devastating consequences for the country.
He also criticized northern political leaders for prioritizing their personal interests over the welfare of their constituents. “Northern governors and politicians are self-centered and have neglected their responsibility to improve the lives of their people,” he stated.
