The candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 presidential election, Mr Peter Obi, on Monday, visited some chieftains of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in what his spokesman, Dr Yunusa Tanko has called his (Obi’s) continued “commitment to the peace and progress of the nation.”

Among those he visited were former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President Senator Bukola Saraki and former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido.

Dr Tanko did not give further details about the visit, except what he called Obi’s “abiding devotion to the emergence of a Nigeria that works for all its peoples and where the people are quickly pulled out of poverty.”

According to him, “At the center of discussion during each of these visits was the state of the nation and how to reduce the suffering of all Nigerians irrespective of class and location.

In particular, the desperate condition of the downtrodden in our midst was highlighted.

“Of particular interest and emphasis in these discussions was the worrisome situation in the Northern parts of the country.”

It was not clear if political issues were discussed during the visits.

Obi was a member of PDP until May 2022 when he resigned and joined the Labour Party. He was Atiku’s running mate in the 2019 presidential election.

There were calls by some PDP members, for the party to woo Obi back, so as to be able to recapture political power in 2027, given his impressive performance in the 2023 presidential election.

Obi joined the little known Labour Party less than 10 months to the election, and secured the same number of states with President Bola Tinubu, then All Progressives Congress (APC), and Atiku.
