Ballon d’Or 2023: How Messi Floored Haaland By 105 Points To Win Award

The number of votes Lionel Messi used to beat Erling Haaland in the just concluded 2023 Ballon d’Or award has been revealed.

Lionel Messi won his record eighth Ballon d’Or ahead of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe last Monday.

 

The 36-year-old was handed the award after receiving the highest votes from countries following his breath-taking performance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he scored 7 goals in the process and also won the Coppa America and Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain.

His closest challenger, Erling Haaland won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in one season.

However, about 75 countries, including Nigeria, were in favour of Messi winning the award while 20 countries backed Haaland.

 

Leo Messi scored 462 points to beat Erling Haaland on 357 points.

 

This means that the Inter Miami star won the Ballon d’Or over Erling Haaland by 105 points.
