Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has called on African leaders to prioritise the welfare of their citizens and place public interest above personal or political gain.
Obasanjo made the call while speaking on the state of governance and leadership in Africa, stressing that the continent’s development largely depends on leaders who are committed to serving the people with integrity and vision.
According to him, many of Africa’s challenges, including poverty, corruption and slow development, stem from leadership failures and the inability of some leaders to focus on the needs of the people.
He urged current and future leaders across the continent to adopt transparent, accountable and people-centred leadership, noting that genuine progress can only be achieved when leaders act in the best interest of the public.
Obasanjo also emphasised the importance of long-term planning, good governance and responsible leadership in building stronger institutions and sustainable development across Africa.
The former president maintained that Africa has the human and natural resources needed to thrive but must be guided by leaders who are willing to put the collective good of their nations above personal ambitions.
