The leadership of the Labour Party led by its National Chairman, Julius Abure, has warned that any attempt to dissolve the party’s elected ward, local government and state executives would be unlawful.

The warning was issued on Saturday in a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, amid the ongoing leadership crisis within the party.

According to the statement, the party leadership was reacting to what it described as moves by a “discredited faction” of the party led by Senator Nenadi Usman to dissolve the existing executives across the country.

“The leadership of the Labour Party has taken note of a statement issued by a discredited faction of the party wherein it made light of a wise counsel by the Independent National Electoral Commission warning that the Senator Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee lacks the powers to dissolve the existing Ward, Local Government and State executives of the party and replace them with handpicked interim executives,” the statement said.

The Abure-led leadership stressed that the party’s constitution clearly outlines how party executives can emerge or be removed, insisting that no caretaker committee has the authority to arbitrarily dissolve duly elected officials.

It also urged the Nenadi Usman-led group to respect the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission and refrain from actions that could further deepen the internal crisis within the party.

The Labour Party leadership warned that any attempt to impose new executives outside the party’s constitutional processes would not be recognised.

The statement further called on party members nationwide to remain calm and loyal to the party’s constitution while efforts continue to resolve the leadership dispute.
