AKPABIO OPPOSES BILL TO DECRIMINALISE ATTEMPTED SUICIDE
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has opposed a proposed bill seeking to decriminalise attempted suicide in Nigeria, arguing against replacing criminal penalties with rehabilitation.
The bill has reignited debate over how Nigerian law should treat people who survive suicide attempts and whether the response should focus on punishment or mental health support.
Supporters of decriminalisation argue that treating attempted suicide as a criminal offence can discourage people experiencing severe emotional distress from seeking help. They advocate a public health approach that prioritises counselling, treatment and rehabilitation.
The debate also raises questions about the role of mental health services and the need to address the circumstances that may lead people to attempt suicide.
Akpabio’s reported position has drawn attention to the disagreement over the proposed legal changes. The bill’s progress and the final position of the National Assembly will determine whether the existing legal framework is amended.
