POLICE LOCATE NYSC KIDNAPPERS’ CAMP, SAY HIDEOUT IS MINED WITH IEDS
The Imo State Police Command has located the suspected camp where abducted prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members are being held, but security operatives have been unable to immediately move into the area because the hideout is reportedly mined with improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Audu Garba Bosso, disclosed that security operatives tracked the suspected kidnappers into the bush and deployed drones to locate their hideout.
According to the police, the drone operation helped identify the suspected camp, but intelligence indicating the presence of IEDs around the area has made a direct assault too risky.
Bosso said security agencies are preparing to use specialised equipment, including bulldozers and armoured personnel carriers, to gain access to the location while protecting both the abducted victims and the rescue teams.
The prospective corps members were abducted after suspected gunmen attacked buses conveying them towards NYSC orientation camps in the South-East.
Security agencies have continued efforts to locate and rescue the victims, while working to neutralise the threat posed by the explosives around the suspected kidnappers’ hideout.
Authorities have assured families that the rescue operation remains ongoing and that security forces are working to secure the safe release of those still in captivity.
