Former Imo State Governor and former Senator representing Imo West, Rochas Okorocha, has dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Hope Uzodimma to court over the 2027 Imo West senatorial ticket.
Okorocha is challenging the recognition of Uzodimma as the APC candidate for the Imo West Senatorial District election.
The former governor maintains that he emerged victorious in the APC senatorial primary and is asking the court to determine whether INEC was right to recognise and publish Uzodimma’s name as the party’s candidate.
Okorocha is also challenging the circumstances surrounding the conduct and outcome of the primary, including the reports submitted by INEC officials who monitored the exercise.
The suit seeks clarification on whether INEC was bound by the reports of its officials concerning the primary and whether the commission could publish a candidate’s name where there is a dispute over the outcome.
The legal battle could now determine who ultimately flies the APC flag in the Imo West senatorial election in 2027.
The dispute adds to the growing political contest within the APC as politicians position themselves for the 2027 general elections.
The case is expected to attract significant attention in Imo State as the court considers the arguments from the parties involved.
