Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has claimed that Peter Obi weakened his chances of winning the 2027 presidential election when he left the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Fayose argued that Obi’s decision to leave the ADC affected the opposition’s efforts to build a strong political platform ahead of the 2027 election.
According to him, the opposition needs unity and a clear strategy if it hopes to mount a serious challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
He maintained that political calculations and alliances would play a major role in determining the outcome of the next presidential election.
Fayose also criticised what he described as the inability of opposition politicians to maintain a common front, warning that divisions could ultimately work in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obi has remained one of the prominent figures in Nigeria’s opposition politics following his strong performance in the 2023 presidential election.
His political movement and the possibility of an opposition coalition have continued to generate debate ahead of 2027.
Fayose’s comments come amid ongoing realignments among opposition parties and politicians seeking to challenge the APC at the next general election.
He suggested that opposition leaders must prioritise unity, strategic alliances and the interests of Nigerians if they want to defeat the ruling party.
The former governor’s assessment has added to the growing debate over Obi’s political future and the shape of the opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
