The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised the alarm over an alleged plan to arrest its National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, ahead of the Osun State governorship election.
The party expressed concern that the reported move could be politically motivated and aimed at weakening its activities and mobilisation ahead of the election.
The ADC called on security agencies and other relevant authorities to uphold the rule of law and ensure that political actors are not targeted because of their affiliations or activities.
The party also urged its members and supporters to remain calm and law-abiding, while warning against any action capable of escalating political tension in the state.
According to the ADC, Aregbesola remains focused on his responsibilities within the party and has continued to participate in political activities ahead of the election.
The party appealed to Nigerians and the international community to pay close attention to developments surrounding the election and ensure that all political parties and their candidates are allowed to participate freely.
The allegation comes amid heightened political tension in Osun State as parties intensify their final mobilisation ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The ADC maintained that any attempt to intimidate, harass or unlawfully arrest its national secretary would be resisted through lawful and constitutional means.
The party also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies to remain neutral and ensure that the election is conducted in a peaceful, free and credible manner.
