Okun association defends Amupitan, says he’ll boost electoral credibility
The Okun Development Association (ODA) has defended the appointment of Joash Amupitan as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), expressing confidence in his ability to strengthen the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
In a statement, the association described Amupitan as a seasoned legal professional with the integrity and experience required to lead the electoral body effectively.
The group noted that his appointment comes at a critical time, amid heightened political activities and growing concerns over electoral transparency ahead of the 2027 elections.
Addressing recent controversies, including INEC’s derecognition of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership, the association urged Nigerians to give the new chairman the benefit of the doubt.
It emphasised that Amupitan’s leadership could help restore confidence in the electoral system and ensure fairness in the conduct of elections.
Observers say the endorsement reflects ongoing debates surrounding INEC’s decisions and the broader need for trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
