The Acting Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro, Dr Mikhail Akinde, has commended President Bola Tinubu for the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), describing its impact on students as undeniable.
Akinde revealed that the institution received about ₦32 million from the scheme, benefiting no fewer than 233 students who might have otherwise been unable to continue their education due to financial constraints.
He noted that the intervention enabled many students to sit for their examinations, highlighting the programme’s role in improving access to higher education.
The VC made the remarks during a media engagement and exhibition of locally fabricated machines ahead of the institution’s 23rd convocation ceremony.
He also called on investors to partner with the institution in mass-producing innovations developed by staff and students, including solar-powered tricycles, palm oil processing machines, bottle shredders and agricultural equipment.
According to him, such collaborations could help reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported machinery, promote local production and create employment opportunities.
Akinde emphasised the need for practical, skill-based education, stating that institutions must focus on producing graduates who can drive innovation and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Observers say the development highlights the growing role of education financing and innovation in shaping Nigeria’s economic future.
