Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy has called for stronger collaboration with the European Union (EU) to tackle rising maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea.

Speaking at a recent engagement, the minister highlighted growing concerns over illegal fishing, piracy, trafficking and other criminal activities that continue to threaten regional security and economic stability.

He stressed that the transnational nature of maritime crimes requires coordinated international efforts, noting that enhanced intelligence sharing, joint patrols and capacity building would be critical in addressing the challenges.

According to him, the Gulf of Guinea remains a vital global shipping route, making it essential for stakeholders to work together to safeguard trade and protect marine resources.

The minister also emphasised the need for stricter enforcement of maritime laws and improved surveillance systems to deter criminal activities in the region.

Observers say stronger cooperation between Nigeria, regional partners and international bodies like the EU could significantly reduce maritime insecurity and boost confidence in the region’s maritime economy.
