UK asylum deal applies only to illegal Nigerian migrants, not foreigners — Presidency
The Presidency has clarified that the recently signed migration agreement between Nigeria and the United Kingdom applies solely to Nigerian citizens residing illegally in the UK and does not involve the acceptance of deported foreign nationals.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, made the clarification in response to reports suggesting that Nigeria had agreed to receive non-Nigerian deportees under the arrangement. He stated that such claims were inaccurate and had led to unnecessary public concern.
According to Ajayi, the agreement is aimed at strengthening cooperation on migration management, including the return of Nigerian nationals who do not have legal status in the United Kingdom. He emphasised that the deal aligns with international standards on the repatriation of citizens and respect for national sovereignty.
The presidential aide also noted that the government remains committed to protecting the rights and dignity of Nigerians abroad while working with partner countries to address issues related to irregular migration.
Officials added that the agreement forms part of broader diplomatic engagements between both countries, focusing on security collaboration, economic cooperation and institutional reforms.
Observers say the clarification may help address misinformation surrounding the migration pact and provide a clearer understanding of its scope and implications.
