Former U.S. President Donald Trump has said he should have a role in determining who becomes Iran’s next leader following the death of Ali Khamenei.
Trump made the remarks while reacting to reports about possible successors to Iran’s long-time supreme leader. According to him, the choice of the next leader in Iran could have major consequences for global security and relations with the United States.
He warned against the emergence of what he described as another “hardline leader” and rejected suggestions that Khamenei’s son could take over the position.
Trump argued that the international community, particularly the United States, has a strong interest in ensuring that Iran’s future leadership does not continue policies that he believes threaten stability in the Middle East.
The former president said the selection of Iran’s next leader should be carefully monitored to prevent the rise of individuals who could escalate tensions with Western nations.
Political analysts, however, note that Iran’s leadership succession process is determined internally by the country’s clerical establishment and its Assembly of Experts, meaning external influence is highly unlikely.
Observers also say Trump’s comments reflect ongoing political tensions between Washington and Tehran that have shaped relations between the two countries for decades.
Iran has not officially responded to Trump’s remarks, but officials have previously maintained that decisions about the country’s leadership remain a strictly domestic matter.
