The Presidency has accused the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) of spreading misinformation about the newly amended Electoral Act, 2026.

On Thursday, the opposition parties criticised the law, describing it as “obnoxious,” a threat to democracy, and an alleged attempt to entrench a one-party state in Nigeria.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the Electoral Act amendment bill into law on February 18 after its passage by the National Assembly.

Key Provisions of the Law

The amended Electoral Act provides for:

Electronic transmission of election results

Manual collation as a fallback where technology fails

Nomination of candidates through direct primaries and consensus

However, both ADC and NNPP rejected the new provisions, calling on the National Assembly to repeal and re-enact the legislation.

Presidency Fires Back

In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Presidency asked the opposition parties to desist from what it described as “constant lamentation and unwarranted outrage” against the APC-led federal government.

“The opposition, particularly the ADC, has turned irresponsible political statements into an art form, all in a bid to attract cheap headlines and mislead the public,” the statement read.

It further accused the parties of exaggerating the effects of the new Electoral Act, adding that their “inability to organise and tendency to blame others for their own disorganisation and unpreparedness” was evident.

The development has sparked fresh debate across political circles as stakeholders continue to analyse the implications of the amended law ahead of future elections.
