As Nigeria gradually moves toward the 2027 general elections, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is reportedly positioning itself to take advantage of deepening divisions within opposition parties, a development political observers say could shape the outcome of the next polls.

Sources within the political space note that internal crises, leadership tussles, and unresolved factional disputes continue to weaken major opposition parties, making the prospect of a united front against the ruling party increasingly uncertain. While opposition figures battle over party structures, court cases, and control of party machinery, the APC appears focused on consolidating power and strengthening its nationwide structures.

President Bola Tinubu, who assumed office in 2023, is expected to seek a second term in 2027. Analysts say the absence of cohesion among opposition parties could give the APC an early edge, even before campaigns officially begin. Efforts by opposition leaders to form alliances or mergers have so far been slow, plagued by mistrust and conflicting ambitions.

Political analysts argue that Nigerian elections are often decided long before election day, largely through party organization, elite consensus, and voter mobilisation. In this context, the APC’s relative internal stability contrasts sharply with the ongoing turmoil in opposition camps, raising concerns among critics about a potential one-sided contest.

Despite public calls for unity, opposition parties have struggled to agree on a common strategy or consensus leadership. Some observers warn that unless urgent steps are taken to resolve internal disputes and present a credible alternative to voters, the ruling party could cruise into the 2027 elections with minimal resistance.

For now, the political landscape remains fluid. However, with time ticking and the ruling party already strategizing, many believe the window for opposition realignment is rapidly closing.
