Governor Ahmed Aliyu has pledged improved emergency response and support for affected traders following a devastating fire outbreak at the Sokoto Old Market, which destroyed more than 50 shops.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of the day, razed several sections of the popular market, consuming goods worth millions of naira and leaving many traders counting heavy losses. Although no casualties were reported, the incident has sparked renewed concerns over fire safety and emergency preparedness in major commercial centres across the state.

During a visit to the scene, Governor Aliyu expressed sympathy with the affected traders and described the incident as painful and unfortunate. He assured victims that the state government would not abandon them in their time of need.

“This is a very sad incident, and my heart goes out to all the traders who lost their means of livelihood,” the governor said. “The government will work closely with relevant agencies to support those affected and prevent a recurrence.”

Aliyu also vowed to strengthen emergency response mechanisms in the state, particularly the fire service, noting that rapid response is critical in minimising losses during such incidents. He promised improved funding, better equipment, and enhanced training for emergency personnel.

According to him, preliminary reports suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault, though investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause.

Traders at the market appealed to the government for urgent assistance, including financial relief and improved safety infrastructure. Some also called for the installation of fire hydrants and stricter enforcement of safety regulations within markets.

The Sokoto State Government has since directed relevant authorities to assess the extent of the damage and compile a report that will guide relief efforts.
