Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described the killing of a housewife and her six children in Kano State as a devastating tragedy, saying the horrific incident plunged the nation into deep sorrow.

In a statement shared on his official social media platforms on Tuesday, Obi expressed profound grief over the murder, describing it as one of the most painful reminders of the insecurity confronting many Nigerian families.

“The gruesome murder of a mother and her six innocent children is a heartbreaking tragedy that no family or society should ever experience,” Obi said. “My deepest condolences go to the bereaved family and the people of Kano State.”

While condemning the killings in strong terms, Obi commended the Nigeria Police for what he described as swift and decisive action that led to the arrest of the prime suspect shortly after the incident. According to him, the prompt response by law enforcement demonstrated that Nigeria has the capacity to tackle violent crime when institutions function effectively.

“The swift response and arrest of the suspect by the police shows clearly that Nigeria can defeat crime if our security agencies are properly equipped, motivated, and supported,” he noted.

Obi stressed that beyond arrests, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive approach to security, including intelligence gathering, community policing, and addressing the socio-economic conditions that fuel crime.

He called on government at all levels to prioritise the safety of lives and property, adding that no meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.

“Every Nigerian deserves to feel safe in their home. We must build a country where the protection of life is truly sacred and guaranteed,” Obi added.

The Kano State Police Command had earlier confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder, assuring the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing and that justice will be served.

The incident has continued to spark outrage and grief across the country, with many Nigerians calling for stronger measures to curb violent crimes and protect vulnerable families.
