I’m Not a Member of Ohanaeze Ndigbo’ — Wike Clarifies Igbo Ties, Issues Warning
Former Rivers State Governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that although he enjoys a cordial and long-standing relationship with Igbo people, he is not a member of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organisation of the Igbo nation.
Wike made the clarification while reacting to claims and speculations linking him to the group, stressing that his association with the Igbo community should not be misconstrued as organisational membership or political allegiance to any ethnic bloc.
“I have very good relationships with the Igbo people across the country, but I am not a member of Ohanaeze Ndigbo,” Wike said. “People should stop attributing positions to me that I have not taken.”
The former governor warned against what he described as deliberate attempts to politicise ethnic relationships, noting that such narratives were capable of deepening divisions and misrepresenting his political stance.
Wike emphasised that his engagements with leaders and communities across Nigeria are driven by governance, national unity, and mutual respect, rather than ethnic or sectional affiliations. He added that political disagreements should be addressed on their merits, not framed through ethnic lenses.
The statement comes amid ongoing national debates over zoning, ethnic representation, and political alignments ahead of future elections, with Wike often finding himself at the centre of discussions due to his outspoken positions and cross-regional political relationships.
He urged political actors and commentators to exercise restraint and accuracy in public discourse, warning that false narratives could inflame tensions and distract from pressing governance issues facing the country.
