A former chieftain of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has warned the All Progressives Congress (APC) that it risks losing the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State if it presents what he described as a “kindergarten governor” to the electorate.

The ex-ANPP stalwart, who spoke on the lingering political crisis in the state, said Rivers voters are politically sophisticated and will not support a weak or inexperienced candidate imposed through party manipulation.

According to him, the ongoing rift within the APC and the deepening power struggle among key political actors have weakened the party’s structure and credibility ahead of the next general elections.

“Rivers people are not politically naïve. They cannot be deceived or forced to accept a kindergarten governor in 2027. Any party that underestimates the intelligence of Rivers voters will be punished at the polls,” he said.

He accused the APC of prioritising personal interests and godfatherism over competence and governance, warning that internal divisions could cost the party dearly if not urgently addressed.

The former ANPP chieftain also cautioned against external interference in the state’s political affairs, noting that Rivers has a history of resisting imposed leadership.

“Politics in Rivers is not controlled from outside. Anyone thinking they can install a governor without the people’s support is living in self-deceit,” he added.

He urged political parties contesting the 2027 election to present credible, experienced and people-oriented candidates capable of addressing insecurity, economic hardship and development challenges in the oil-rich state.

Political observers say the statement reflects growing unease within opposition circles over the APC’s prospects in Rivers amid unresolved internal conflicts and shifting political alliances.
