Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South Senatorial District, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abaribe, a long-time political figure in Abia State and the South-East, announced his decision after weeks of speculation about his future within APGA. Sources close to the senator said the move was driven by growing dissatisfaction with internal party structures, leadership direction, and preparations for upcoming elections.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Abaribe said his decision to join the ADC was based on his belief that the party offers a broader platform for democratic participation, national unity, and effective opposition politics. He stressed that Nigeria needs a credible alternative capable of addressing the country’s economic hardship, insecurity, and governance challenges.
“At this critical point in our nation’s history, there is a need for a political platform that truly reflects the aspirations of the Nigerian people. My decision to join the ADC is guided by the desire to contribute meaningfully to building such a platform,” Abaribe said.
The senator, who has previously served as Senate Minority Leader and is known for his outspoken positions on national issues, is expected to play a key role in strengthening the ADC’s presence in the South-East and nationally as political realignments intensify ahead of 2027.
Reacting to the development, ADC leaders welcomed Abaribe into the party, describing his defection as a major boost to the party’s credibility and electoral prospects. They said his experience, legislative record, and national profile would add momentum to the party’s efforts to build a strong coalition ahead of the next general elections.
Meanwhile, APGA officials in Abia State have yet to issue an official response, though party insiders admit the senator’s exit could reshape political calculations in the state, where APGA has remained influential.
Abaribe’s defection adds to the growing wave of political movements across party lines as politicians position themselves and their parties for the 2027 polls, expected to be one of the most fiercely contested elections in Nigeria’s recent history.
