OSUN STATE, Nigeria — Tension and fear have gripped Ora Igbomina, a border community in Ifedayo Local Government Area of Osun State, after heavily armed bandits launched a violent attack late Monday, killing a community leader and abducting a former Nigerian customs officer, authorities and eyewitnesses have confirmed.
The gunmen, suspected to be bandits, stormed the Akisa Road area of the community at about 7:00 pm, firing indiscriminately and creating panic as residents fled for safety. In the onslaught, High Chief Isaac Fadipe, the leader of non-indigenes, was shot dead, while Prince Emmanuel Owolabi, a retired customs officer, was seized from his home and taken to an unknown location.
Eyewitnesses say the attackers operated in large numbers, keeping the settlement in their grip for several hours before escaping through nearby farmlands. Local security guards and vigilantes reportedly tried to resist the assailants but were outgunned and forced to retreat as the bandits maintained control of parts of the town.
Residents have described a chilling scene of fear and uncertainty, with families abandoning their homes and children crying as the violence unfolded. Some travellers on the nearby Oteere-Ila road were also targeted in the chaos, with gunfire forcing motorists to flee and leave vehicles behind.
In response, the Osun State Government and security agencies have said a coordinated military-backed rescue and protection operation is underway to secure the community and trace the kidnappers. Governor Ademola Adeleke, in a statement on Thursday, condemned the attack and ordered that the Nigeria Police Force and Amotekun Corps work together more closely, ending a recent standoff between the two agencies to ensure a unified security strategy.
The governor also directed an emergency security meeting and issued fresh operational guidelines for Amotekun, stressing that working in isolation would no longer be tolerated and that joint efforts must be sustained to prevent future breaches.
Osun State Police Command has additionally deployed Mobile Police Force units and tactical squads to boundary communities to bolster patrols and intelligence-led operations aimed at flushing out criminal hideouts and protecting residents during the yuletide season and beyond.
Local leaders and citizens are appealing for increased security presence and urgent measures to rescue the abducted former customs officer while safeguarding lives and property in the area.
