The Sokoto State Government has approved โ‚ฆ8.4bn for the reconstruction of the Sokoto Central Market, years after a major fire disrupted activities at the commercial hub.
Officials say the project is aimed at restoring the marketโ€™s economic relevance and supporting traders affected by the incident.
The approval was issued during Thursdayโ€™s State Executive Council meeting.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Nasiru Dantsoho, said the contract will be handled by 38 contractors selected from within the Sokoto business community. He added that the state will fully fund the project to ensure quick and efficient delivery.

Dantsoho noted that Governor Ahmed Aliyu had earlier pledged to rebuild the market, which remains the largest trading centre in the state.

The Council also approved the draft 2026 budget for submission to the State House of Assembly. Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Zayyana, said the budget was prepared using the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework to enhance transparency and fiscal stability.
