Tinubu to Speak at UN General Assembly on September 24

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to address world leaders at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.
According to a revised list of speakers from the UN, Tinubu will deliver his speech on the second day of the high-level debate. His slot is in the afternoon session, around 8:30 pm New York time (2:30 pm Nigerian time), making him the 17th world leader to speak that day.
This year’s UNGA will feature about 195 leaders, including 98 heads of state, 5 vice presidents, 44 heads of government, 4 deputy prime ministers, 37 ministers, a crown prince, and 4 chairs of delegation.
As tradition dictates, the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will open the debate, followed by the U.S. President, Donald Trump, as the host country’s leader.
In 2024, Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu at UNGA and unusually spoke on the first day of the debate, a slot typically reserved for heads of state. Diplomats described this as a sign of Nigeria’s strong goodwill in the international community.
UN officials noted that the schedule may still change if Tinubu does not attend in person.
