Ex-SGF Babachir Lawal quits APC, fueling fears of party implosion

Babachir David Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has formally resigned from the ruling party.
In his resignation letter addressed to the APC chairman in Bangshika Ward, Adamawa State, Lawal did not specify his reasons, though it is widely believed to be linked to his earlier disagreement with President Bola Tinubu over the party’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in the run-up to the 2023 elections.
Lawal clarified that, for now, he has not joined any other political party but hinted at plans to announce his future political affiliations later.
His exit adds to growing fears of internal crisis within the APC, especially in northern Nigeria, as the party heads toward the 2027 general elections. This comes amid recent moves by an opposition coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, which has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a platform to challenge the APC’s hold on power.
