Lagos reopens Oko-Oba Abattoir after sanitation improvements

The Lagos State Government has reopened the Oko-Oba Abattoir in Agege, which was shut down on June 19 over poor hygiene and environmental violations.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the operators had now met the minimum hygiene and operational standards set by the government.
As part of the conditions for reopening, the ministry will carry out monthly inspections to ensure compliance.
The ministry urged operators to maintain proper sanitation, manage waste responsibly, and handle animal products hygienically to protect public health.
Earlier, Wahab expressed concern after an inspection, highlighting issues such as waste being discharged into drainage systems and people sleeping inside the market with animals—practices he described as unacceptable and unsafe.
