IG Orders Probe Into Viral Video Claiming N2m Police Retirement Pay

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed a thorough investigation into the claims made by a retired Superintendent of Police who appeared in a viral video decrying the inadequacy of his retirement benefits.
The retired officer, who reportedly served in the Nigeria Police Force for 35 years, expressed deep disappointment over what he described as a “meagre” payout of N2 million as his total terminal benefit. He retired on October 1, 2023.
According to the officer in the video, the Nigeria Police Pension Board had informed him that his approved retirement benefit amounted to N3 million, which included N1 million in arrears from October 2023 to date, and N2 million as his full retirement settlement.
In response to the public reaction sparked by the video, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, issued a statement on Thursday confirming that the IGP had instructed NPF Pensions Limited to urgently review the matter. The directive includes identifying any possible lapses and taking appropriate corrective action.
The IGP also emphasized the importance of constructive feedback in reforming the police pension system. He acknowledged that although progress had been made in recent years, public input such as this case remains vital for identifying gaps and implementing meaningful improvements.
