Bayo Onanuga who was recently named the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, on Thursday posted his verified X account, concerning “the president’s request for a presidential yacht in the 2023 supplementary budget by the Navy and the other is over N6 billion for vehicles to the State House.” Onanuga’s post was to pitch a position that the yacht was not for the president, but for the navy.

Reacting to the post, Nigerians came down heavily on Tinubu and Mr Onanuga, stating that the demand was irrelevant and uncalled for at a time the World Health Organization’s data says 71 million Nigerians live in abject poverty, and millions of other well meaning Nigerians grappling with the struggling economy which came after Tinubu announced he had removed fuel subsidy, and ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria to float the Naira against foreign currencies; a developing which has seen driven the naira above ₦1,000 at the parallel market.

Nigerians React

“Nigerians don’t need such items on the budget at this critical times,” a Twitter user Kenny David replied Onanuga.

“Luxuries like Presidential Yacht and Extra-Presidential Lodge should be postponed till when the economy makes a surplus as we currently are in a great loss as a nation” he added.

Another user, Kalu Ajala said the yacht proposal is a waste.

Also reacting, Olasupo Jakes, took a jibe at the post.

Jakes said: “Navy needs a “luxury yacht” and couldn’t include it in the defence budget?

Navy don’t need a luxury yacht for its operations. What they need is patrol boats and military vessels. Stop taking Nigerians for a mug”
