The deepening crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has further widened as former governors Samuel Ortom and Ayo Fayose declared support for the Nyesom Wike-led faction, while Oyo State Governor Seyi Makindeโs camp begins regrouping ahead of the partyโs national convention.
Former Benue and Ekiti governors, Ortom and Fayose, in separate statements on Sunday, endorsed the faction led by National Vice Chairman (North Central), Abdulrahman Mohammed, and faulted acting National Chairman Umar Damagum for worsening the partyโs internal conflicts.
The feud escalated after a Federal High Court in Abuja halted the PDPโs planned November 15โ16 national convention in Ibadan, citing non-compliance with the partyโs constitution and the Electoral Act. The injunction deepened division as both factions traded suspensions over alleged financial misconduct and anti-party activities.
Ortom, a PDP Board of Trustees member, described Mohammedโs emergence as โa fresh opportunity to rebuild trust and heal internal wounds,โ urging leaders to prioritise reconciliation. Fayose, meanwhile, accused Damagum of โburying the party,โ insisting that Mohammedโs leadership could rescue the PDP from collapse.
Sources close to Governor Makinde confirmed that discussions are ongoing among allied governors to appeal the injunction and revive preparations for the convention.
In a related development, former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim condemned the court order as a ploy to weaken opposition, while defected Osun senator Adenigba Fadahunsi declared that โthe PDP is as good as dead,โ praising President Bola Tinubuโs reforms instead.
